Featured in USA TODAY: How Gen Z Is Changing House Parties

I was soooooooo excited to share a hidden, unexpected trend with USA TODAY that no one is talking about: Gen Z is changing house parties. Yep, house parties.

The parties are still happening, just not the way people remember them from the 80s and 90s.

Three major differences I see as both a researcher and parent of a teenager:

  • Gen Z is growing up under constant observation.
  • Everything can be recorded.
  • Anything can live online forever.

So, of course, that changes behavior. More hesitation. More awareness.

Less willingness to take social risks in the moment. And that part really stands out to me.

Because those moments used to be where you learned key things, such as:

  • Independence
  • Decision-making
  • Confidence

If those moments are happening less often, what replaces them?

This is about a lot more than house parties. This is about how a generation learns to navigate risk, relationships, and real-world situations. It’s also an outcome of the broader technological and social changes happening rapidly.

If you work with, lead, or serve Gen Z, this is worth paying attention to. Check out the full story on the USA TODAY website here.
