Thrilled to be Featured on CNBC Discussing Gen Z’s Social Media Revolution
Yes!!! It’s true. Gen Z is leading a quiet social media revolution. I was thrilled to explain it to CNBC!
What is the revolution?
Some in Gen Z and even younger Millennials are starting to step back from social media. Maybe you’ve seen this yourself?
Online nastiness and divisiveness, constant comparisons, and mental well-being are all driving this emerging trend.
Ironically, where is Gen Z most talking about this trend? You guessed it: social media.
The common theme amongst Gen Zers stepping back or intentionally taking breaks from social media is a desire for more control, balance, and well-being in their lives.
Gen Z also knows that social media platforms view them as a product and are constantly trying to monetize them through ads and feeds that keep the generation’s attention and play on their emotional responses. Gen Z is especially sensitive to this as they’re the most advertised-to generation in history (until Gen Alpha gets older!).
I am very interested in how governments around the world choose to handle social media and the regulation of minimum age requirements for its use.
BIG thanks to CNBC for including my perspective in this important conversation. This is one area we’ve been discussing for years in our State of Gen Z annual study and in our Gen Z book, Zconomy.
This emerging trend is important to watch, as it has implications for leaders, brands, and stakeholders seeking to connect with younger generations. You can read the full article by clicking here, and there will be more to come from our research at CGK! Thanks for being on this journey with us.
