Honored to Present at HireVue’s Horizon Customer Summit

Hiring is Hard. But It Doesn’t Have to Be.
That’s the big takeaway I had after keynoting HireVue’s Horizon Customer Summit.
This wasn’t your typical conference. It was a hands-on, high-energy look into the future of hiring—led by people who are not only imagining what’s next, but building it right now.
The Event Was a Masterclass in What’s Working
What stood out most? The people. Horizon brought together HR innovators, talent acquisition leaders, data scientists, and technologists who are tackling some of the biggest challenges in hiring today. Together, they’re rethinking everything—from how we evaluate candidates to how we bring opportunity and humanity back into a process that has a tendency to be more black and white.
I felt like a kid in a candy store hearing from HireVue’s data science team. They didn’t just talk about models and metrics—they shared real-world hiring results that stemmed from their technological innovations. Real impact. Real transformation. (And yes, I took pictures of the data science team’s slides. I’m a Millennial. Those charts were fantastic.)
Two Insights Really Stuck With Me
First: Hiring hasn’t changed much in over 100 years.
The résumé? It’s been around for over four centuries. And we’re still using it as the primary way to evaluate talent—even though it often can leave out some very important characteristics the applicant may possess, such as potential, soft skills, and adaptability. This could cause companies and organizations to overlook some candidates that otherwise could have worked out very well.
Second: Skills-based hiring isn’t the future—it’s already here.
HireVue’s approach focuses on surfacing the skills that may not show up in an applicant’s résumé. They don’t focus exclusively on where someone went to school, or even what job title they had last. They focus on what the applicant can actually do. And it’s opening doors—for employers and for candidates who might’ve been overlooked in the past.
More Than Tech—This Was About People
What made this event special wasn’t just the technology they are innovating (though it was impressive). It was the combination of bold ideas and real empathy. Every conversation centered around making the hiring experience better for everyone involved. Faster. Fairer. Smarter.
I got to connect with so many leaders who are already seeing this shift in action—and it’s exciting to hear that these new methods are working for many employers, organizations, and leaders today.
Why This Matters Now
We’re in the middle of massive change. New generations are entering the workforce. Technology is moving faster than ever. And so it may be time to re-evaluate the traditional hiring playbook, just as HireVue is doing!
What I saw at Horizon helped to prove that when we focus on skills, use smart tools, and lead with purpose, we can create a hiring experience that has the potential to work for everyone.
I left inspired. And from what I saw, I wasn’t the only one!
